In AGV and AMR operations, energy management is directly linked to fleet availability. The primary charging strategy is typically built around stationary charging infrastructure, while onboard chargers are used as support for maintenance charging, vehicle recovery, and exceptional operating conditions.

For OEMs, service teams, and fleet operators, onboard chargers provide a practical part of the broader fleet charging strategy. They support maintenance charging, vehicle recovery, and battery management in situations where stationary chargers are not immediately available or where vehicles need temporary charging access outside normal operation.

Supporting AGV and AMR fleet availability outside normal charging operation

Most AGV and AMR fleets rely on stationary chargers for operational charging and opportunity charging during normal operations. A common fleet usually has significantly fewer chargers than vehicles, making the charging infrastructure highly optimized for everyday production conditions.

However, situations such as extended production shutdowns, holiday periods, or unexpected vehicle stoppages create different requirements.

In these cases, onboard chargers enable maintenance charging by allowing a vehicle to be connected directly to a standard single-phase outlet. This helps prevent AGV and AMR batteries from reaching critically low states of charge during prolonged downtime, especially when parked fleets experience parasitic loads while production is shut down.

For service personnel, onboard chargers can also be used as recovery charging tools when a vehicle becomes stranded due to low battery state of charge. Instead of transporting the vehicle manually, technicians can provide temporary charging on-site until there is enough energy to move the AGV or AMR to a stationary high-power charging station with full system communication.


Faster recovery and safer Lithium-ion battery management

The value of onboard charging is often measured in reduced service complexity rather than energy efficiency alone.
For example, Micropower onboard chargers can communicate with Micropower Lithium-ion batteries via CAN. This supports controlled Lithium-ion system integration and enables faster and safer charging compared with non-communicating chargers, which may need to charge very slowly to avoid triggering battery protection functions.

An additional benefit is the ability to help recover batteries that have entered a protective safety mode, such as after extended low state-of-charge conditions. In these situations, service personnel may be able to restore battery operation without connecting separate diagnostic tools or service software.

For OEMs and fleet operators, this contributes to shorter service interventions and increased vehicle availability.

Rugged stationary charging in demanding environments

For some AGV and AMR applications, onboard chargers can be used as stationary chargers in demanding environments where dust, humidity, extreme temperatures, and general contamination can affect the charging equipment. In these settings, charger durability and enclosure protection become important factors in the broader fleet charging strategy.

Micropower onboard charger platforms such as RO3000 and RO66 offer higher IP protection and allow for operation in extreme temperatures, making them suitable for use in harsher industrial conditions. This gives OEMs and fleet operators an additional way to support reliable charging access where environmental exposure would otherwise limit charger placement or increase maintenance needs.

While this is not the primary use case for onboard chargers in AGV and AMR fleets, it highlights their practical value as a flexible charging solution beyond standard operational infrastructure. High energy efficiency remains an additional benefit, particularly where reliable charging access, reduced heat generation, and long-term component performance are important.
